Performance Monitoring and Logging

Once software is live, engineering teams need real-time visibility into system health. Observability — powered by metrics, logs, and traces — ensures you can catch and resolve issues before they affect end-users.

The Three Pillars of Observability

1. Metrics

Time-series numerical data measuring system health, such as CPU usage, API latency, and request counts per second.

2. Logs

Timestamped text records detailing specific application events, error messages, and background actions.

3. Traces

Tracks the end-to-end journey of an individual user request as it traverses microservices and database queries.

Monitoring Tool Categories

  • APM (Application Performance Monitoring): Datadog, New Relic, Dynatrace — monitors latency, resource usage, and overall application health.
  • Centralized Logging: ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana), Grafana Loki — collects and indexes logs across distributed infrastructure.
  • Error Tracking: Sentry, Rollbar — aggregates real-time stack traces and unhandled exceptions.
  • Alerting Systems: PagerDuty, Opsgenie — routes high-priority incident alerts to on-call engineers.

Key Takeaway: Robust monitoring and log aggregation turn hidden production errors into actionable fixes before users notice outages.
